Can I just use one voice coil?
You can — but don’t. Leaving one coil disconnected on a dual voice coil sub is electrically valid and gets you the coil’s rated impedance on its own. It is also the fastest way to damage the sub.
A DVC sub is designed with both coils sharing the work. Run one and you roughly halve its power handling, and all the heat lands in a single coil with the other doing nothing to help dissipate it. The cone also sits in a weaker, less symmetrical motor force. People try this to hit a convenient impedance and then wonder why they cooked a coil.
If the impedance you want isn’t reachable with both coils wired, change the sub count or buy the other coil configuration of the same model — don’t strand a coil.
